Join Nordic in remembering the legacy and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Nordic strives to follow in the footsteps of Dr. King and his transformative work by promoting ACTION in the areas that Dr. King himself emphasized: Volunteerism and Philanthropy.

Remembrance in action

Since early 2023, Nordic has performed or participated in the below events in alignment with Dr. King’s vision:

In our workplace

  • Implicit bias training: Required training for Nordic leaders; all employees were encouraged to participate.
  • Enhanced PTO policies supporting the observance of Juneteenth and Martin Luther King Dr. Day.

Facilitated BELIEVE (Black Employees Leading In Excellence, Vision, and Education) employee resource group (ERG) sponsored events :

  • DEI Matters Live: Welcomed Percy Brown Jr., former head of DEI across multiple industries, to talk about the importance and influence of the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
  • Food for Thought Series: Partnered with Afromeals, Chef Gabi, to prepare cultural dishes to increase knowledge and awareness among our employees.
  • Sound Bite Events: Celebrated music from around the world in observance of Global Diversity Awareness month, honored Black women in music for Women's History Month, and rejoiced in songs from the Civil Rights Movement for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
  • Juneteenth Panel Discussion: Hosted Dr. Christine Pribbenow, senior scientist at the Wisconsin Center for Education Research at UW-Madison, and Donald D. Dantzler, researcher/evaluator with the Wisconsin Center for Education Research in the LEAD Center, to discuss the concept and consequences of implicit bias.
  • Participation in the "How to be a Better Ally Virtual Training" sponsored by Uplifting Impact, represented by BELIEVE and the ally community.
  • Retreat encouraging Black associates to address effects of imposter syndrome and associated limited belief systems during which the group celebrated the history of the civil rights movement via a tour of the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

 

In our community

Provided volunteer efforts/hours and monetary donations to multiple community-based organizations:

  • JustDane - A Dane County organization that provides programs for individuals returning to the community after incarceration and support for the families of those incarcerated through reading programs, family visit programs, and mentoring programs.
  • The King Coalition - A Dane County community group that plans and runs events in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day for the official City of Madison and Dane County. Half of the proceeds from MLK Day 2022 events were donated to Little John's (a pay-what-you-can eatery that reduces food waste) and the Dane County Voter ID Coalition.
  • Hammond Boys & Girls Club (HBGC) - An organization that provides a positive community meeting place for youth, ranging from ages 3 & up. The HBGC offers after school homework, tutoring sessions, technology, and indoor/outdoor recreational activities.
  • Reach Dane - Toy Drive supporting marginalized families.
  • The Youth Black Excellence Cooking Class & Meal Kit Program run by Pasture & Plenty in partnership with Rooted - Sponsorship to provide a December cooking class and meal kit series for at-risk students. 
  • The Progress Center for Black Women - An organization that provides a collaborative workspace to create supportive professional and social connections.
  • Repairers of the Breach - A grassroots homeless outreach organization.
  • Black Girls Code - Engages girls of color with computer programming education.
  • Voices Against Violence - Provides comprehensive services to victims of domestic violence.
  • Poor People's Campaign - An organization that works to dismantle systemic racism, poverty, ecological devastation, etc.
  • YWCA - An organization committed to eliminating racism and empowering women.
