  • Epic Enterprise

The University of Kansas Health System partnered with Nordic for an enterprise Epic extension project. They were two weeks away from super-user training and two months away from go-live when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the United States. Social distancing restrictions meant classroom training was no longer an option. They needed a plan to convert classroom training to a virtual format that leveraged existing system resources and allowed for a sustainable and repeatable approach to implementation training.

Nordic worked with The University of Kansas Health System to adapt previously created classroom materials into a fully virtual program within six weeks. Following adult learning principles, Nordic evaluated learning objectives and carefully mapped them to e-learning modules and virtual classroom sessions, reducing class time by up to 35%. Paired with a post-class reinforcement program, this streamlined approach improves retention and end-user adoption.

With Nordic, we deployed a virtual training program to onboard hospitals joining our system and prepare new users for go-live. We kept our trainers and trainees safe by eliminating COVID-19 exposure and allowing our infection prevention staff to focus on patients and caregivers. This program is our springboard for the continuation of virtual learning, both for new hires and new implementations, to reduce costs and deliver a stellar experience.

What this program shows is that with thoughtful preparation, adult educational principles can be effectively applied to a virtual platform. We wanted to prove that virtual training can be successful and drive behavioral change, and we did that. Our partnership with Nordic resulted in a successful remote training program that we can take forward to the next project.
