U.S. health systems have made significant investments in health IT since the passing of the HITECH Act in 2009. The Act opened the door to the widespread adoption of electronic health records (EHRs), further enabling the enhancement of the patient experience. Post-COVID-19 market realities have created a shift, giving patients a panel of choices based on safety and convenience. Healthcare systems need to rethink IT planning and development efforts under the lens of patient experience for healthcare consumers to realize the benefit of health IT investments.
In this technical paper, we discuss the regulations and financial incentives that led to the current state as well as guiding principles to ensure that digital transformation becomes a reality for patients.
